Rooted in Purpose
The story behind Next Step Transition Center
Every great journey begins with a simple purpose.
For our founder, Traci Johnston, that purpose was ensuring that young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities didn't lose opportunities for growth once they graduated from school.
As a special education teacher, Traci witnessed an all-too-common reality. Many of her students were leaving the school system with limited options for continuing to learn, build relationships, and develop the skills needed for greater independence. She knew there had to be something more.
That vision became Next Step Transition Center.
Inspired by the idea of creating a "college-like experience," Traci designed a structured day program where young adults could continue learning, building confidence, exploring their communities, and working toward greater independence in a supportive, encouraging environment.
What started in a single room at the Deer Park Community Center with just a handful of participants quickly became something much bigger. As families began sharing their experiences and the impact Next Step was making, our program continued to grow. Before long, we outgrew our first space and moved into a larger facility to better serve the incredible individuals and families who trusted us with their journey.
Today, Next Step continues to expand across Texas, but our mission remains exactly the same as it was on day one—to empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to reach their fullest potential, build meaningful lives, and become active members of their communities.
We're proud of where we've come from, but we're even more excited about where we're going.
